Spencer, first trappist brewery in the USA
Spencer, Massachussets, is the town where the USA will have its first trappist brewery.
Trappist beer is brewed by a trappist brewery. There is nine Trappist abbeys: Six from Belgium, two from the Netherlands and one from Germany. 8 of them founded the International Trappist Association (ITA) to prevent non-Trappist commercial companies from abusing the Trappist name.
Those 8 breweries are Achel, Chimay, Rochefort, Orval, Westmalle, Westvleteren, Koningshoeven and Stift Engelzell. And now, there is the brewery Maria Toevlucht!
St Joseph’s abbey in Spencer is a monastery of “The trappists”. It is famous for its jelly and jam. And now, they will brew beer, under the advisement of Chimay.
You could see these lines on the bottles:
Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table. Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruity accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness.
